«Le quartier latin» de Yûsuf Idrîs, et «L’oiseau d’orient» de Tawfîq al-Hakîm

     Deux livres comparables dans leur sujets premiers : un étudiant arabe (libanais dans le premier, égyptien dans le deuxième), vient faire ses études dans le Paris après la deuxième guerre mondiale. L’époque précise est assez vague mais bon, là n’est pas l’important. L’important est la fascination de ces deux étudiants pour le pays, la France, où ils viennent terminer leurs études, avant de repartir chez eux.

     Les deux tombent amoureux d’une française, deux histoires d’amour qui se terminent mal, deux histoires qui rapprochent ces romans presque de la catégorie «coming of age books» des romans anglo-saxons : le jeune homme/ la jeune femme qui découvre le monde et perd ses illusions.

     Mais malgré cela, je trouve qu’il reste une illusion, jusqu’au bout, ce que j’appelle «l’occidentalisme», tout comme Edward Saïd a décrit l’orientalisme des européens fascinés par «l’orient» et qui ont construit, à travers leurs oeuvres artistiques et littéraires une représentation de l’orient pas toujours très réaliste, pour ne pas dire complètement illusoire, eh bien là nous avons affaire, dans une certaine mesure, à la même chose en inverse : des intellectuels du monde arabe, découvrant «l’occident», fascinés par lui, rapportant avec eux une image pas toujours très réaliste. Il y a suffisamment d’éléments réels pour y croire, mais au final, c’est une telle série de clichés, comme les films américains tournés à Paris où il y a toujours quelqu’un qui joue de l’accordéon et jamais une seule poubelle trop pleine sur le trottoir, qu’on n’y croit plus guère.

     Mais cela reste des lectures intéressantes, voire amusantes, pour découvrir l’image qu’avaient les arabes de l’occident, bien avant que les vidéo-clips ne viennent polluer les représentations (car il faut l’admettre, il est aujourd’hui bien dur, dans les reste du monde, et pas seulement arabe, de combattre cette image de dépravation totale qui colle aux «occidentaux»).

«The latin quarter» by Yûsuf Idrîs and «A bird from the Orient» by Tawfîq al-Hakîm

     Two books that are very alike in their subjects : both are close to the coming-of-age book category, involving both a young arab intellectual who comes in Paris to finish his literary studies (in the first book he is lebanese, in the second egyptian), who discover another world and lose some of his illusions. Both books could be something very close to an autobiography, but they are presented as a novel.Both young men fall in love with a french girl, and both love stories don’t end well.

   Both stories are quite enjoyable, and a quick read, but both convey what I call «westernism» : the same way Edward Saïd defined orientalisme as the representation of oriental countries ans people made by european intellectuals and artists through their books and art, a representation not always realistic, not to say, in some cases, seriously not realistic, so here we have the same thing in reverse. Arab intellectuals discovering «the west», fascinated by it, and bringing back with them representations slighlty distorted.

It sounds true because lots of details look true, but at the end of the day, it is such an accumulation of clichés - like american movies taking place in Paris where there is always someone playing on the accordion and not a single overflowing trash bin on the street - that you end up not believing so much in the story. 

     But they are still interesting lectures, even funny, if only just to discover the image arabs had of the West before video-clips and easily available porn came and seriously damaged everything (one has to admit that now it is very hard to fight off the terrible image of a depraved western society in the rest of the world, not only in the arab world).

كتابان ممتعتان ومتشابه في موضوعتهما : فتى يسافر الى باريس ليكمل دراساته في الأدب ويقع في حب فتاة فرنسية وتنتهي القصة الغرامية بشكل حزين. وبعد ذلك يرج الفتى الى بلاده وعائلته.

مثير للانتباه اذا تريد ان تكشف كيف يرون العرب الغرب قبل عصرنا حيث الكليبات والافلام الجنسية سهل الحصول عليه عبر الانترنت تفسد كل شيء (الصورة للغرب اصبح سيئًا جدا أيضأ في هذا المجال) ولكن القارئ يجب أن يعرف أن هذين الكتابين يحملان صورة مشوهة نوعًا ما للغرب : مثلما فعل الستشراقيون الغربيون في أعمالهم من صور خيالية عن البلدان الشرقية فشكّلا المؤلفان صورًا  خيالية نوعًا ما عن الغرب وفرنسا خاصة ...  أسمي ذلك الستغراب
